Mo’s Pizza & Wine Dive could be the closest thing to homegrown pizza pies for Mercer Islanders.

Tim Slattery, a 2002 Mercer Island High School graduate and owner of Mo’s, decided to return to his roots and open a restaurant on the rock. Although Slattery makes his home in Ballard, his kitchen is now on Mercer Island. And so are most of his family, some of whom will work at Mo’s alongside other Islander employees. In all, Slattery has hired 16 people.

Mo’s Pizza and Wine Dive caters to the loca-vore, with a taste for quality food and service, he said.

Every two days, Slattery said he’ll pick out fresh, organic produce from local growers with the help of his kitchen manager.

One-hundred percent whole milk mozzarella, homemade tomato sauce and fresh toppings are just a few of the ingredients that will set his Sicilian style pizzas apart, he said. All pizza and pasta sauces are be made in house.

“We never prep anything more than a day ahead,” he said.

Slattery understands the current economy — that times are tough.

“Pizza is a really great recession-proof food,” he said. “We don’t think you should have to pay an arm and a leg for this stuff.”

In addition to pizza, Mo’s offers a variety of other dishes including soup, organic salad, Italian-inspired sandwiches, antipasto and cheese plates, and more.

Beverages include soda, beer bottled and on tap, and wine by the bottle or glass.

Dessert is also on the menu board for diners with extra room.

Original tart frozen yogurt is available with fresh fruit, nut or caramel sauce toppings, and piping hot sticky buns and Italian puffs are sure to satisfy any sweet tooth.

Slattery has purchased teak tables and chairs for the outdoor patio area for use when the weather is nice.
