According to the Web site www.calculatedriskblog.com, which publishes an unofficial list of what it identifies as “problem banks,” the number of banks nationwide in trouble has risen to 599. Twenty-five of those banks are within Washington State.

Calculatedriskblog.com says that it uses information from public sources to make the list. The list does not include banks that have already closed.

The majority of the banks identified in Washington are headquartered in the Puget Sound region and include banks such as Frontier Bank, Homestreet Bank, Eastside Commercial Bank of Bellevue and Viking Bank.

America West Bank and Sterling Savings Bank, both headquartered in Spokane, are also on the list.

Regulators have closed six Washington banks in the last year, including Horizon Bank, Evergreen Bank, and just last month, American Marine Bank.
