Three Mercer Island High School graduates attending the University of Washington are getting a lesson in fundraising by assisting a competitor in The Annual Miss Greek competition in order to raise money for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

Maggie Santangelo and Zoe Stranger, both 2010 MIHS graduates, and Audrey Walker, of the class of 2008, are helping raise funds for Meeghan Dooley, who attended Holy Names in Seattle. All four are members of Alpha Delta Pi.

The contestants are judged on several categories: fundraising, talent, philanthropic services and community awareness, and personality. In addition to the effort that the women put into the pageant, the Miss Greek Pageant is highlighted each year by a celebrity master of ceremonies as well as a celebrity judges panel.

The 25th Annual Miss Greek Pageant will be held this year on April 17 at 6 p.m., in Meany Hall on the University of Washington campus.

Last year’s event raised $92,000 for cancer research at Fred Hutchinson, bringing the total to over $1.4 million raised over the duration of the event.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased from a contestant or at the door. Proceeds from ticket sales benefit the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Santangelo said the event sold out last year.
