Community calendar | Jazz at South end Starbucks, Friday
The “Jazz and more Holiday Jam” at the South end Starbucks event is set for 3:30 p.m. this Friday, Dec. 23. The musicians will include MIHS alumni and current MIHS and IMS students playing jazz renditions of holiday tunes. Anyone from the community is also welcome to bring their instrument or sing. Music will be provided. This is not a fundraiser, just an event to bring the community together for the holidays.

Polar Bear Plunge at Mary Wayte Pool: 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Dec. 22, Mary Wayte Pool, 8815 S.E. 40th Street. Come join other swimmers and jump in the pool for a brisk swim. Bring a wet suit. The facilities boiler is being repaired during the week and this will be the last day the pool is open before the Christmas holiday. Please bring two nonperishable food items for the local MI Youth and Family Services food bank.
Christmas Ships: 7:50-8:10 p.m., Dec. 22, Luther Burbank Park, 2040 84th Ave. S.E. The beautifully illuminated ships will be stopping at the swimming beach. Arrive early because this draws a crowd and parking space is limited. Please note: the Parks and Recreation Department will not be hosting any activities for this event. www.mercergov.org.

Herzl-Ner Tamid Annual Chanukah Party: 6 p.m., Dec. 24, Herzl-Ner Tamid, 3700 East Mercer Way. The night will start with havdallah and bring-your-own chanukiah lighting, followed by a Chinese dinner prepared by C&E Catering, featuring sufganiot (fried donuts). HNT Theatre will show the movie “The Princess Bride.” Adults (ages 13 and older): $10. Kids ages 3-12: $7. Kids 2 and younger: free. www.h-nt.org.

Christmas Tree Pickup: Dec. 30, Jan. 7-8. Have your Christmas tree hauled away, hassle free, while simultaneously supporting Mercer Island Lacrosse. Team players and parents will pick up trees. To make a reservation for the service, call (206) 659-5529 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. Then, after “undressing” your tree, drag it to your curb by 9 a.m. on the pickup date. Donations of $20 or more, per tree, are encouraged; attach a check, inserted in a Ziplock-type bag, to one of the top branches. Donations are tax-deductible.

First Annual Holiday Styrofoam Recycling Event: Dec. 22-31, Islander Middle School north parking lot, 8225 S.E. 72nd St. Supported by Mercer Island Schools and Boy Scout Troop 647. A trailer will be marked. Bring all clean, dry Styrofoam. Large pieces can be tossed in. Pieces smaller than a dinner plate should be placed in clear plastic garbage bags.
