MIHS students earn top placements at Eastshore Music League festival

Over 150 musicians from Mercer Island High School performed on Feb. 4 as part of the Eastshore Music League solo and ensemble festival. Performances took place every 10 minutes in 22 different categories from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Liberty High School.

"“From clarinets playing Copland to baritones playing Bach, our students demonstrated some of the most outstanding musicianship I have had the pleasure to see in my career here at MIHS. I am very proud of the thousands of hours of work, practice, parental support and more that went in to this extraordinary day," said Parker Bixby, the music teacher and band director at MIHS.

Ten Mercer Island students won their category, and 11 were alternates. The winner move on to participate in the Washington State Solo and Ensemble contest in Ellensburg later in the year.

Category winners include: David Stewart and Mary Wingerson for bass clarinet, Shea Kelsay in trumpet, Alex Gore on French horn, Annalise King on euphonium and Dylan Lesko in marimba. The MIHS woodwind quintet featuring Ryan Gorey, Isaac Miller, Gore, Neha Shah and David Stewart won their category, as did the MIHS brass quintet featuring Kira Newell, Kelsay, Gore, King and Nolan Conway. The MIHS euphoria group of King, Dalton He and Gore also finished in first place, as did the MIHS percussion ensemble featuring Lesko, Nate Umlauf, Martin Look, Lana Kleiner-Kanter, Taylor Hartley, Amanda Tsang, Meghan Hershkowitz, Ryan Ottinger, Lachlan Tritton, Billy Peterson, Nathan Lindae-Fregoso, Tanner Martinez, Henry Eckert, Josh Bender, Anthony Pedreira and Dylan Ma.

First alternates included: He and Conway on the euphonium and Miller on the oboe. Second alternates include: Hershkowitz for marimba, Rachel Rosenman on clarinet, Nicole Anderson on trumpet, James Wilson on trombone, the Rootin Flutin flute duet of Hannah Frisch, Groey and He. The wind symphony flute octet also finished as a second alternate.
