A new tradition has begun at Mercer Island High School.

On the night before school started, dozens of seniors' parents took up chalk and drew messages in their sons' and daughters' parking spaces, to be an early morning surprise. Some siblings also joined in.

"We all created beautiful, personalized messages in each of our child's parking spots," Lois Fuhr, a parent of a senior, said. "There was talk of rain in the forecast, but we carried on in the hopes it would hold off until the seniors arrived to school. But a major thunder and lightening storm overnight washed away all these wonderful designs. But the rain can't wash away the love we have for all of them and the pride we have in being their parents."
