Rotary Islanders for May

David Chase and Kate McConaughy, Mercer Island High School seniors, have been named the Rotary Islanders of the Month for May.

Chase is a Student Advisory Board officer at MIHS, where he is also a member of the tennis team, a Bridges2 leader, and the editorial, ads and calendar editor for the Islander newspaper. In the community, he volunteers as a participant in V.O.I.C.E. and Relay For Life, and coaches fourth-grade basketball at the Boys & Girls Club. The son of Brad and Judy Chase, he plans to attend Northwestern University in Illinois this fall.

McConaughy has been volunteering in the community and overseas since a young age — beginning with service projects at an orphanage in Tijuana, Mexico, where she returned as a sophomore to help build houses for homeless people. She has also volunteered overseas with Agros International in a Nicaraguan village and has helped take supplies to orphanages in Cambodia and Vietnam. Locally, she has helped out at the Northwest Harvest food bank; helped with tech support at Youth Theatre Northwest; and served at the Mercer Island Presbyterian Church, where she has been a confirmation mentor, helped with the annual auction and Vacation Bible School, and participates weekly with sound and video technical support during worship. She is also a member of the student tae kwon do leadership team at Mercer Island Martial Arts.

The senior, a daughter of Ben and Dawn McConaughy, will attend the University of Portland in the fall.
