Mercer Island families learn about sustainability at Leap for Green fair

This year’s Leap for Green sustainability fair in Mercer Island had everything from one-week old lambs to music performed by a band of Mercer Island bus drivers.

Kids and families had a chance to play with Leap, the event’s frog mascot, as well as composted dirt, provided by Cedar Grove, and farm animals from Animal Encouters. There were also food and sustainable vendors, including Igloo Rolls ice cream, Puget Sound Energy, Neighbors in Motion, Friends of Luther Burbank and many more.

Transition Initiative Mercer Island provided information about the effects of climate change on Mercer Island, the Mercer Island Farmers Market introduced new manager Lora Liegel and Mercer Island children’s librarian Linda Ernst read books about recycling and other green topics.

This event began in 2008 to celebrate Earth Day (April 22) by promoting environmental practices and activities for kids and adults, and to raise general awareness of local sustainability resources.

Correction: A previous version of this story listed Homegrown sandwiches as an event participant. The vendor was Homegrown trailers.
