Little Britches Bakery offers ‘cakes’ and more for babies
Little Britches Bakery started with a wave of babies. Many of Megan Coppersmith Szerwo’s friends were having kids, and when she saw a two-tiered diaper cake in a Seattle boutique, she had all the inspiration that she needed.
Since its beginning four years ago, Little Britches Bakery has been a home-based, part-time business on the Island’s First Hill. Szerwo and her husband, Brandon, live in the house that once belonged to her grandmother, who now lives in Covenant Shores. The couple has two cats adopted from a shelter, Madison and Jackson.
While Szerwo’s bakery does not turn out edible treats, it offers baby gifts that look like delectable desserts. Orders are all handmade.
Szerwo is employed full-time in a communications role with the City of Seattle IT Department, and has been married for 1 ½ years. Her husband picked out her ring the day before Prince William and Kate Middleton’s engagement was announced, and then proposed to Szerwo a month later. The ring, as it turned out, was a sapphire resembling Kate’s ring.
During the past two weeks, Szerwo has seen a surge in baby showers — 10 total. She also caters to other events: a couples’ pregnancy announcement, gender-reveal parties, and post-birth events.
“It’s a really great creative outlet for me,” said Szerwo, who creates custom orders of diaper cakes and cupcakes.
Most often, a theme is requested — a mother may want a sock monkey theme, or Seahawks with a feminine touch of pink Gerber daisies for a little girl. Szerwo’s most unique creation was an Alaskan Way Viaduct diaper cake for a friend who worked for WSDOT.
A three-tiered cake contains 50 diapers, and a two-tiered cake has 30, taking anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes to assemble. Cupcakes — available individually or as a four-pack or six-pack — contain onesies and washcloths.
Little Britches Bakery will be giving away a royal diaper cake in honor of the birth of Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge. For details, go to the Bakery’s Facebook page. A winner will be selected on Friday, Aug. 9.
