On Friday, a group of Mercer Island Sister City Association members will travel to the Island’s sister city, Thonon-les-Bains, along the shores of Lake Geneva (Lac Leman) in the Haute Savoie region of France.

Once there, their itinerary will take them, among other places, from the canals of Vieux Annecy to a small maker of fine French fromage in the foothills of the Alps above Thonon; from fine dining at La Prieure in Thonon to a stay at the lovely Auberge d’Anthy, with its renowned owner and chef of the lake and local foods; from the beautifully preserved lakeside medieval village Yvoire to the nearby town of Bourg-en-Bresse, where the beautiful Cathédrale Notre-Dame de l’Annonciation de Bourg-en-Bresse stands through time in testament to the enduring love of a woman for her husband, and where the local specialties are dishes of Volaille de Bresse (Bresse chicken) and Grenouille (Bresse frog legs).

Amidst this array of outings and fine sampling of the local cuisine, the highlight of all will be the group’s stay and cooking classes at Thonon’s L’École Hôtelier Savoie Léman, one of the oldest and finest schools in France for preparing and training chefs and professionals in the hotel industry.

Trip participants are fortunate that the school’s staff will provide several days of lessons in fine French cooking and, along with the school’s students, will prepare several dinners for the group. A second trip highlight will be lunch at the Hotel de Ville, or Thonon City Hall, as guests of the city and their sister city association.

The Mercer Island Sister City Association (MISCA) is a nonprofit, community-based organization promoting educational, cultural and other exchanges between the citizens of Thonon-les-Bains, France, and Mercer Island.

The Mercer Island/Thonon-les-Bains relationship was founded in 2000 and is composed of individuals and organizations interested in promoting close ties between both cities, as well as creating opportunities for citizens and organizations to experience and explore other cultures through long-term friendships and partnerships.

Among their activities, the Sister City Associations of Mercer Island and Thonon-les-Bains organize group exchanges for students and adults of their communities.
