Thanks to Susan Blake, former City Councilmember, School Board member and current Historical Society member:

“The etched historical map in the sidewalk in front of Albertsons was made possible by the federal grant connected to the I-90 project and the one percent for art. That money also provided the artful grates around the sidewalk trees and the historical references at sidewalk intersections. The year was around 1994, so it’s not surprising that with the evolution of change, hardly anyone is left in government who might remember. It was fun to dust it off and remember our homage to historical Mercer Island.”
