Chess team takes third at state meet

The Mercer Island High School chess team, the 2005 KingCo League chess champions, placed third in the Washington State Chess Championship held last month at West Valley High School in Yakima, Wash. More than 30 varsity teams from high schools from all over the state competed in the two-day marathon tournament.

In the final round, MIHS was paired against Roosevelt High school. The team defeated Roosevelt and took third place in the tournament with a final combined score of 17.0 out of a possible score of 25. Lakeside and Garfield high schools repeated as first and second place teams at the event.

Individual state championship awards were also given to top placing team members. Adi Lanka and Steven Taki. Other members of the MIHS varsity chess team included Gregory Lee, Kevin Ting and Stewart Summerfield.

MIHS will field a four- player varsity team at the National High School Chess Championships in April in Nashville, Tenn.
