Ko, Weyhing honored

Chip Ko, son of Charlene and Jeff Pimentel and Sid and Janet Ko, and Whitney Weyhing, daughter of Ben and Bonnie Weyhing, were honored at a recent Rotary luncheon as "Islanders of the Month." The Mercer Island High School students were honored for the month of March.

Ko, a member of the National Honor Society and Senior Service Club, has been active as a Bridges leader, in art honor society and a member of Natural Helpers, as well as playing clarinet in the MIHS band. His community activities include working with the Blaine United Methodist Church youth group. Ko's hobbies are drawing and painting. His future plans are to attend college.

Weyhing, a National Honor Society member and Bridges2 leader, has been active with the Mercer Island swim team and water polo team. Her community and church activities include working as a teen advocate for the American Diabetes Association, counseling and mentoring diabetic children on various retreats. She has also volunteered at the Burn and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Harborview Medical Center as a recreational therapist. She has worked with the Mercer Island Presbyterian Church to build houses in Tijuana, Mexico. Weyhing's hobbies include kickboxing, traveling and missionary work. Her future plans are to attend college and gain her bachelor's degree in nursing and pursue her goal of participating in Doctors Without Borders.
