Seattle bank robbery suspect shot by police on Mercer Island
Sep 09 2008, 12:11 PM A man suspected of robbing a bank in Seattle was shot by Seattle police detectives on Mercer Island Monday, according to Commander Leslie Burns of the Mercer Island Police Department.

Mercer Island Women’s Club is pleased to announce that the club raised over $13,000 this year for local charities. While the Mercer Island Women’s Club is primarily a social club, it also raises money to be donated to local charities voted upon by its 350 members. During the course of the year, the club holds several fundraisers including a Holiday Bazaar and auction, raffles, luncheons and wreath sales. After tallying this year’s votes, Civic Projects chairs Carolyn Holm and Helen Hitchcock announced the following grants:

• $2,500 to Eastside Domestic Violence, which provides life-saving services, support and accessibility to more than 6,000 victims of domestic violence in our communities.

A display for Older Americans Month at the Mercer Island library shows changes in technology over the years. -   Chad Coleman/Mercer Island Reporter Jun 03 2008, 1:56 PM The Mercer Island Senior Commission entertained ideas from post-55-year-olds on May 30 about what is needed in this community for them.

Suggestions from as many as 50 drop-ins at the “Speak Out” event included greater transportation resources, a designated senior center at the Community Center at Mercer View, neighborhood-based “buddy” support or social networks, the creation of more affordable senior housing, reduced travel hazards such as the placement of additional marked and sound-signal crosswalks, and more in-home services and delivery of goods.
