On April 23, three young women from Mercer Island High School — Michele Zemplenyi, Ladan Mozaffarian and Tamara Babenko — were honored by the American Association of University Women for their academic success in math, science or technology. The students were distinguished before the organization, a national group that promotes education and equity for all women and girls.

A lot of little faces
The Island Children’s Choir will perform their annual spring concert, “Americana,” at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, and 2 and 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 8, at the Mercer Island High School Performing Arts Center. The show will feature 75 boys and girls in fourth through sixth grades performing songs and dances from various states across the country, including California, Hawaii, Louisiana, New York and Tennessee. Island Public Safety officers promoted
Interim Fire Chief Chris Tubbs, right, was formally announced as the new head of the Island’s fire department during a ceremony held on Monday at city hall. Next to Tubbs is his replacement, the new deputy chief Steve Heitman. Round and round they go
The thrill of Friday night bicycle races on the banked oval track of the Group Health Velodrome has returned to Marymoor Park. Up to nine races are held each night. Friday night racing lasts through Sept. 12, Wednesdays until Sept. 10. With up to nine races a night, each competition features cyclists of similar skills – from beginners to accomplished racers, including local Olympians and world champions. Races are scheduled for every Friday evening through Sept. 12 at the Group Health Velodrome – the only velodrome in the state.
