It is easy for candidates to state positions that please the electorate but are unrealistic. Many candidates will tell us what we want to hear while candidates who tell us the truth risk our ire. We then complain that politicians don’t keep their election promises. My hope for this election is that the more sensible, realistic electorate will prevail.

I am compelled to voice my opinion publicly after attending the voters forum on Tuesday. I listened to current City Council members, Tana Senn and Dan Grausz, espouse their vision of transforming our town center into a nightlife destination and business hub. They epiphanized it as a “vibrant city.” I question if they listen to Mercer Island residents.

The deer topiaries in the Park on the Lid, at the base of First Hill, will be permanently removed by the city after turning brown from poor soil conditions. Vandalism was also a problem. The city originally paid $4,500 for the three topiaries.
