A driver who was hit while trying to turn on to Bellevue Way last month died at Harborview Medical Center Saturday. The crash occurred on May 23 when a 60-year-old Mercer Island resident driving a BMW 528i was hit by a Mitsubishi flatbed truck while trying to turn on to Belleuve Way Southeast from the Sweyolocken boat ramp, Bellevue police said.

Jason Schell has made the kind of mural that whets the appetite for public art pieces. Entitled “A Sunday Afternoon Under Mexico City,” the 34-year-old Bellevue School District teacher has created a sequence of six panels displaying an interconnected snapshot of life on the Metro, meditating on what he calls, “the profound experience in everyday life.”

A 74-year-old Mercer Island woman avoided injury - and potentially electrocution - after driving her car up a utility pole Friday morning. Bellevue Police Officer Seth Tyler said the woman was driving westbound on Lake Washington Boulevard and looking to make a slight left turn onto Overlake Drive East. She did not see oncoming traffic and swerved to the right. In her attempt to avoid the cars, Tyler said, the woman drove up a PSE guide wire.

A Starbucks store manager barred a post office employee from all Starbucks on Mercer Island, with police officers as witnesses, after the suspect used his break at 12 p.m. on Sept. 20 to take multiple photos of women employed at the South end Starbucks.

Mercer Island High School principal John Harrison announced Oct. 4 that he will be stepping down to take a position with the Bellevue School District, after six years at MIHS. His last day at MIHS is Oct. 13. MIHS is his fourth school as a principal, and fifth as an administrator.
