Eco-conscious Islanders turn to reusable bags

On July 28, the Seattle City Council voted 6-1 to institute a 20-cent fee for the use of paper and plastic bags at grocery, drug and convenience stores. Although the measure only applies to Seattle merchants, eco-conscious Island shoppers are jumping on the bandwagon as well.

Dr. Paul W. Knoll, dearest husband and father, died peacefully at his home in Mukilteo, Wash., surrounded by his family on Aug. 5, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Dr. Knoll was born in Corvallis, Ore., on Sept. 3, 1950, the eldest son of Robert Paul and Eleanor Ann (Thorne) Knoll. He graduated from Mercer Island High School in 1968. Dr. Knoll received a Bachelor of Science in Physics with honors from the University of Washington. On a blind date in 1970, Mary Margaret McCauley stole his heart, and they were married in 1971 in Seattle. Dr. Knoll earned a M.D. degree and did internship and residency training in Internal Medicine at UW, and his postgraduate fellowship in Medical Oncology at UW and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

City seeking citizens to serve on committees for ballot measures
Aug 12 2008, 11:33 AM On Aug. 4, the Mercer Island City Council approved Ordinances No. 08-07 and 08-08 to submit Proposition No. 1: General Obligation Parks and Open Space Bonds, and Proposition No. 2: Levy for Park Operations and Maintenance, to King County Elections for inclusion on the Nov. 4 General Election ballot.

According to King County Elections and Washington State Law, the City of Mercer Island has the responsibility of appointing committees to prepare statements in favor of and in opposition to ballot measures.

Mercer Island property values skyrocket, buildings worth less
Sep 09 2008, 11:56 AM Many Island homeowners were shocked when they opened their mailboxes last Friday to find that the assessed value of their home and property had changed dramatically. The King County Assessors office mailed out its new batch of "Official Property Value Notices" to Islanders and residents throughout the county. Islanders are puzzled and angry by what they saw.
