The Mercer Island 9-10 Little League baseball All-Stars capped an undefeated playoff tournament by capturing the Mercer Island Little League’s first Washington state championship on July 27.

MI Girls Basketball (MIGB) is offering free clinics in August for girls in grades four through eight. Fourth, fifth and sixth-grade clinics will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. on Aug. 21 and 7-8:30 p.m. on Aug. 25 at the MI Boys and Girls Club. The clinics will be run by the fifth and sixth-grade select team coaches. At the clinics, MIGB will be introducing Jennie Rondel as the new fifth-grade coach. Coach Rondel played college basketball at Santa Clara University and coached Lake Washington High School varsity girls basketball team last season. Also running the clinics will be sixth-grade Select coaches Matt Price, former MIHS men’s varsity player and record holder, along with Dawn Wilson. Both have been coaching MIGB for the last two and three years, respectively.

Matt Boyd, a Mercer Island resident and Eastside Catholic baseball player, has had a busy year with numerous regional all-star team selections, helping to guide the Crusaders through an undefeated league schedule and verbally committing to play at Oregon State University. What’s next? His senior year of high school.

Mercer Island’s only 18U select team, Mudville Baseball NW (42-19, 5-2) has captured the 2008 Triple Crown National 18U Championship defeating the No. 1 seed, Lone Peak Knights of Alpine, Utah, 6-1 in the championship game. After a 1-2 start in the Round Robin portion of the event, Mudville made the necessary offensive and defensive adjustments, winning four straight games in four days to capture the national championship at Supliezio Field, home of the National Junior College World Series. Mudville struggled initially in the seeding rounds to qualify in the double elimination event. Mercer Islander Cam Wilson won the only game of the Round Robin play, defeating the Newcastle Blue Sox (CO) 11-2. Wilson struck out six and walked two, not allowing an earned run.

The Olympics have a little something for every sports fan — casual or diehard. Watching Michael Phelps has been great theater. Although there is no relation to myself as far as I know, I do get a kick out of seeing “Phelps wins gold” flash on every news and sports Web site on the Internet. But Phelps’ quest for eight gold medals, the most won at one Games by an Olympian in history, brings the best of sports to the forefront of our culture. I haven’t heard much talk of steroids at these games — the only time was when previous world record holders hailed from the former East Germany.

Mercer Island's Opdycke completes swimming’s triple crown

Mercer Island High School graduate Rendy Opdycke swam the Catalina Channel, from Catalina Island to the California mainland, in eight hours and 28 minutes on Aug. 9. It is the third fastest time for a woman and the sixth fastest time overall, out of 145 people who have swam the channel solo since 1927.

Markwith, Godfred swim around Island, raise $4,000 for charity

The first game of the 2008 football season on Sept. 5 will be special. Not because of the team’s new coach, the opponent or the action on the field, but for the halftime activities. The Mercer Island High School Hall of Fame will induct six new members during the halftime ceremonies, including four giants of the Islander basketball community and two of the most decorated swimmers in school history.

Sweet potato pies, corn on the cob and barbecued ribs — these items and more are offered by Island Bar B-Q, a new Island business that opened in June. Many of its recipes, from barbecue sauce to pound cake, were created by owner N.L. [Northa] Turner, 62, an Island resident of 15 years.

Fidelity National Title’s new Mercer Island branch is now open in the WaMu Building. Fidelity National Title Group is part of Fidelity National Financial, the largest title insurer in the nation and a Fortune 500 company. Cori Nickerson is the account manager and Sharon Pollock is the assistant account manager, along with Escrow Officer and LPO Christy Roberts and Fidelity’s Chief Title Officer Terry Sarver. Nickerson has been in the title business for 19 years and has earned the distinction of National Achiever Award winner for 10 years.
