Thefts occur in string of 7 car prowls on North end | Mercer Island Police Blotter

Oct. 27

ICW/Merrimount accident: A head-on collision occurred at 6:50 a.m. when a vehicle driven by a Mercer Island man, 64, made a left turn from Merrimount Drive onto Island Crest Way at the 4400 block and hit an oncoming Jeep that was unable to avoid the collision. Neither vehicle was towed, and no injuries were reported.

Arrest: A Seattle woman, 29, with an outstanding Mercer Island warrant was arrested at 5:50 p.m. in the 500 block of 5th Avenue. She was booked into the Issaquah Jail.

Oct. 28

Arrest: A Mercer Island woman, 54, was arrested for a third time at a residence on West Mercer Way at 5:36 p.m., having been previously arrested on Oct. 22 and Oct. 24 for violating a protection order. She had called the petitioner and left a voicemail, and was booked into the Issaquah Jail.

Street light down: Another street light was taken out by a car at 9:31 p.m. along S.E. 28th Street. The car, driven by a Mercer Island girl with an instruction permit, turned right out of the QFC parking lot onto S.E. 28th Street. Her father was a passenger in the front seat. The girl oversteered and panicked, then accelerated instead of braking. The car drove onto the curb and hit a street light on the sidewalk before coming to a stop in the lot.

Oct. 29

Drug possession: A Seattle man, 27, was arrested for possessing drugs at 5:03 p.m. in the 8200 block of S.E. 24th Street. He had been stopped because of expired tabs. An odor of burnt marijuana was evident to police, who saw that the dashboard had a marijuana joint. The driver was processed and released from the MIPD.

DUI arrest: A Seattle man, 30, was arrested at 5:19 p.m. in the 7600 block of westbound I-90 after he was stopped for driving with expired tabs. The driver had admittedly been driving with a suspended license for a previous DUI and had consumed one beer. He failed voluntary SFSTs. He was booked into the Issaquah Jail, and his vehicle was towed.

Identity theft: A total of $1,500 was stolen from a 38-year-old Bellevue woman’s account after multiple charges were made to her card. She had used her debit card at Islander Pub for dinner at 9 p.m. The card was then used fraudulently at the North end QFC and the Mercer Island Jackson’s gas station. The card number was used again in Canada the next day before the woman cancelled the card.

Oct. 30

Parking lot cash: Three $20 bills were discovered in a pile of leaves in the library parking lot by a 34-year-old library employee at 4400 88th Ave. S.E., who reported the find at 4:27 p.m.

Car prowl: An unknown suspect broke through the front passenger side windows of two vehicles, an Audi and a Ford Ranch, parked in the 3900 block of 88th Ave. S.E. between 5 and 6 p.m. An empty computer bag, purse and wallet including $60 in cash were stolen. There were no witnesses.

Car prowl: The passenger window of a Volkswagen parked in the 8200 block of S.E. 30th Street was shattered between 7:25 and 7:45 p.m. A Blackberry cell phone and purse, with $50 in cash and a debit card, were stolen, along with a T-shirt, key set and glasses.

Car prowl: After smashing the rear passenger side window of an Acura in the 3700 block of Briarwood Lane between 5 and 7:30 p.m., an unknown suspect stole a black shoulder bag that contained a day planner and four school binders.

Oct. 31

Accident: A vehicle driven by a Mercer Island man, 55, backed out of a parking stall and hit a parked vehicle across from it at 10:16 a.m. in the North end QFC lot, then left the scene.

Arrest: A Mercer Island man, 45, was arrested at 9:18 p.m. for malicious mischief and for assaulting a woman, 38, at her Mercer Island residence. The man was booked into the Issaquah Jail.

Nov. 1

Arrest: Washington State Police arrested a Seattle man, 24, at 2:21 a.m. on a third warrant for driving with a suspended license. He was booked into the Issaquah Jail after being taken to the MIPD.

Jewelry theft: $1,108 worth of bracelets were stolen out of a 42-year-old Mercer Island woman’s bedroom. The woman reported the theft, which likely occurred on Oct. 16, at 12:28 p.m. Her teenage stepson is a suspect.

Backpack theft: At 1:14 p.m., a Mercer Island woman, 47, reported the theft of her son’s backpack, which contained $20 in cash, an iTouch and LG cell phone. The backpack was recovered after it was stolen at Mercer Island High School on Oct. 22 in the morning.

Nov. 3

Break-in: Police were notified at 2:35 a.m. of a “suspicious” male teenager standing in the northwest corner of the Youth Theatre Northwest parking lot. The teenager had an object balanced on his head. Police checked the area and discovered that a break-in had occurred at an equipment storage shed for the Mercer Island High School tennis courts. A metal bar found at the scene had been used for prying off the shed’s hasp. A K9 team from the Bellevue Police Department responded.

Cigarette theft: Two cigarette cartons worth $160.90 were stolen around 5:30 a.m. from the Shell station at 2903 78th Ave. S.E. A man took them without paying.

Car prowl: The driver side rear window of a Volkswagen was smashed in the 9600 block of S.E. 34th Street between 5:30 and 6:30 a.m. The victim, a Mercer Island woman, 53, reported at 7:37 a.m. that her child’s book bag, along with a laptop computer and calculator, were stolen.

Car prowl: A garage door opener was stolen out of an unlocked Volvo in the 1900 block of 82nd Avenue S.E. during the night. The theft was reported at 8:15 a.m.

Car prowl: The glove box of a Chrysler was sifted through in the 2200 block of 82nd Avenue S.E. while parked in the owner’s driveway during the night. Cash was missing, and the owner found all of the vehicle’s doors open in the morning and reported it at 8:34 a.m.

Car prowl: An Acura and a Dodge pickup, both unsecured, were prowled in the victims’ driveway overnight in the 9200 block of S.E. 33rd Street. An emergency kit and documents including an insurance card and Washington registration were stolen from one of the vehicles. The report was made at 9:06 a.m.

Document theft: Large containers of legal papers and real estate documents were stolen out of a Toyota in the 2200 block of 82nd Avenue S.E. The theft occurred overnight and was reported at 9:17 a.m. The vehicle had been parked, possibly unlocked, in the victim’s driveway with one window rolled halfway down.
