Getting certain city building permits is easier than ever with expedited or “over the counter” plan review. The Mercer Island Development Services Group offers walk-in, one-day review processes for many permit types, including decks, minor interior remodels and “simple repairs” such as window installations.

“We’ve streamlined the permitting process on smaller building projects because it makes good, common sense. With walk-in permit review, customers can get same-day approval, saving time and money,” said Development Services Group Director Tim Stewart.

The standard review process for small projects typically requires three to four weeks for approval.

Over-the-counter plan review is available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at City Hall (9611 S.E. 36th Street). The project designer (who may be the homeowner) must be present during the walk-in review to answer any questions, provide additional information or make necessary corrections. When more extensive changes are required, the homeowner or contractor can take the plans, make the revisions, and come back during the next over-the-counter session to obtain their permits.
