Not all Mercer Island High School students are paying $.15 for a fork or a spoon at the school. If a student purchases lunch at school, the utensils are free. If a student is bringing their own lunch or is not buying food at school, they must buy the utensils. The charge is to offset the cost of buying compostable utensils, since "green" utensils are more expensive than the plastic ones students were using before.
