A phone call came in to the Mercer Island Reporter newsroom this morning from a Mr. and Mrs. Payne who live in Norfolk, England, approximately 100 miles northeast of London.

The couple drove to London for the New Year's Day Parade, where they saw the Mercer Island High School marching band perform. Mrs. Payne wanted to send out a big thank you to the band and Islanders for their participation and the effort it took to get there with the adverse weather conditions.

"We did have a grandson there in the parade, which made us very, very proud," said Mrs. Payne.

She went on to say how pleased she and her husband were with the Mercer Island High School band.

"The organization, the band leaders — were wonderful," she said.
