The Mercer Island Fire Department is offering a class in the “Safe Steps” program that is designed to help prevent accidental falls in the senior citizen community.

Falling is the leading cause of injury in older adults and ultimately leads to a reduction in the quality of life. The goal of the fire department is to provide helpful tools that can be applied to everyday living. This class is free to anyone who is interested. The department encourages friends, family members and caregivers to attend as well.

The department has already seen strong turnouts at previous classes with positive results. The next class will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 26, at the Community Center at Mercer View in room 103.
