Elderly man robbed in high school parking lot | Mercer Island Police Blotter

An elderly man was robbed in the parking lot of Northwest Yeshiva High School at 3:30 p.m. on April 5. The man, an 84-year-old Seattle resident, sustained a laceration above his right eye after being forcibly pulled out of his vehicle and dropped onto the ground. The suspect grabbed the victim's shoulders and searched his shirt pockets but stole nothing from him or his vehicle, and fled as high school students came out of the building. One witness is listed in the case. Mercer Island police obtained strong leads and actively worked to locate the suspect, who was arrested on Thursday night, April 7. He was booked into the King County Jail on investigation of robbery.
Arrest: Mercer Island police arrested a Federal Way man, 30, at 2 p.m. in the 4000 block of Island Crest Way after stopping him for an expired vehicle registration. The driver had five counts of Failure to Appear on record and was driving with a suspended license.
Burglary: Two adult touring bicycles were stolen out of a garage in the 4800 block of 86th Avenue S.E. sometime overnight. The resident discovered the theft in the morning after finding the garage door open.
Car prowl: A diaper bag was stolen out of a Ford Escape rental car at 12:23 p.m. at Island Crest Park in the 5600 block of Island Crest Way. The bag contained an assortment of clothing. The victim, a 39-year-old man from Long Beach, Calif., heard the passenger window get smashed out. The suspect's vehicle was a silver Dodge Ram pickup.
Stolen plate: Police stopped a vehicle with a stolen license plate at 5:54 p.m. The driver, a Bellingham woman, had placed a front plate on the back of her vehicle. She turned it over to the MIPD.
DUI: After being stopped for a traffic infraction, a Renton man, 62, was arrested at 8:51 p.m. in the 2400 block of West Mercer Way for driving under the influence.
Drug violation: School officials confiscated a bottle of Oxycodone pills from a 14-year-old boy who was passing out the pills to five other students at Islander Middle School.
Car prowl: A black leather purse was stolen out of an unlocked Volvo at 9:15 a.m. in a driveway at a residence in the 8800 block of S.E. 60th Street. The driver, a 32-year-old Mercer Island woman, had left her vehicle for only one minute. The thief then went shopping at Mercer Island businesses, using the woman's stolen credit card.
Arrest: A Mercer Island man, 63, was arrested at 12:04 a.m. for assaulting his wife. He was booked into the Issaquah Jail.
Car prowl: A wallet was stolen out of a Honda Cr-V between 1 p.m. and 1:45 p.m. in the 8700 block of S.E. 71st Street while the driver, a 69-year-old Mercer Island woman, was planting flowers in the southwest neighborhood marker. She had left her vehicle open and unlocked, keeping her tools in the back of the car. Someone stole her wallet out of the console between the front seats. She searched the vicinity with her husband, but found nothing, and later learned from her bank that someone used her debit and credit cards.
Fraud: A 70-year-old Mercer Island man's credit card number was used for fraudulent purchases during the month of March. The man canceled his account and received a new card, but fraudulent activity appeared on his new account in less than a month. The fraud was reported at 10:42 a.m.
Car prowl: Someone broke into a Hyundai Tucson after 9 a.m. in the back of the northeast parking lot at the Stroum Jewish Community Center in the 3800 block of East Mercer Way. The vehicle belonged to a French-American School teacher who returned at 5 p.m. and found that the passenger window had been broken. A diaper bag with baby clothes was stolen, along with an elephant-shaped toy lunch bag.
Burglary: After smashing a back glass door in a home in the 7600 block of West Mercer Way, someone stole two laptops, two TVs and a Playstation 3. The break-in occurred between noon and 2:30 p.m. Suspect fingerprints were lifted from an S. Pellegrino glass bottle and another bottle. The total estimated loss is $5,000.
Theft: A bicycle was stolen out of an apartment storage room in the 3200 block of West Concord Way sometime during the past two months. The bike was a gray Kona King Kikapu with blue lettering and highlights. Its owner, a 24-year-old man, had locked the bike to a rack and reported at 6:50 p.m. that it was missing.
Bike found: The manager of Mary Wayte Pool found a CCM mountain bike in the bushes and reported that it had remained there for several weeks. No one claimed it, and it was turned over to the MIPD.
Arrest: Police arrested a Sammamish man, 33, at his workplace at 4:04 p.m. in the 7600 block of S.E. 27th Street after he did not make a scheduled court appearance. He was booked into the Issaquah Jail.
DUI: After speeding at 50 mph in a 35 mph zone, a Mercer Island woman, 26, was pulled over and arrested at 2:17 a.m. in the 8600 block of S.E. 40th Street. She admitted she had been drinking but refused standard field sobriety tests.
