In six hours, firefighters in the Mercer Island town center raised $8,000 during the Fill the Boot campaign on June 9. Six firefighters from Mercer Island IAFF Local 1762 participated in the campaign to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
"Next year we hope to raise the bar even higher for MDA," said firefighter Thomas Guttu, who has organized the event during the past three years. Since 2009 the total amount raised each year has steadily increased. With the community's support, Mercer Island firefighters have raised more money per firefighter per hour, Guttu said, than any other Washington state fire department.
