Woman stops burglar | Mercer Island Police Blotter
A 43-year-old woman confronted a burglar who was attempting to break into her house at 2:27 p.m., Dec. 28, in the 6100 block of 94th Avenue S.E. The woman heard noises and was checking around her residence when she found the burglar trying to forcefully open the basement window. He had failed to pry open the basement door with a 13-inch pry bar. He fled, and the woman called 911.
By the numbers
The Mercer Island Police Department reported 958 calls for service in December 2011, with one robbery, six burglaries, 28 thefts, one auto theft and two cases of simple assault. There were five injury accidents and eight non-injury accidents, two pedestrian-vehicle accidents, one hit-and-run, seven DUI arrests, and 285 total citations. Police made 26 arrests in December. In 2011 the MIPD reported 13,043 total calls for service — up by approximately 300 calls over 2010, issued 3,769 total citations, and made 354 total arrests.
The calls for service numbers are low for December due to the one-month period when the CAD system was down at NORCOM.
The following information was compiled from MIPD case reports.
Crash: A resident in the 7200 block of 92nd Avenue S.E. heard a crash at 2:22 a.m. and called police. An officer responded and found that two panels in the neighbor’s backyard fence had been destroyed and pushed in toward the yard. A headlight and a piece of an “Acura of Seattle” license plate frame were found at the scene. An unknown vehicle had been traveling southbound on 92nd Avenue S.E. before it crashed into the fence. The homeowner was contacted and remembered hearing a loud noise before hearing a “rice rocket” quickly leave down the street, according to the police report.
Car prowl: Someone stole a backpack out of an unlocked Subaru Legacy in the 7800 block of S.E. 37th Street, in the neighborhoods south of Mercerdale Park, between 10 p.m., Christmas Eve, and 7 p.m., Christmas day. The backpack contained a rope, cords, and a pair of binoculars. The total loss was $150.
Fraud: $808.53 was charged to a 59-year-old Mercer Island man's credit card.
Car prowl: A pack of cigarettes and two sets of DVD player headphones were stolen out of an unsecured vehicle in the 6800 block of 83rd Avenue S.E. sometime overnight.
Theft: A 57-year-old man made an agreement with a Bellevue man to sell his car, a Hummer, to a third party in mid-November, but the Bellevue man took the vehicle, forged the title paperwork and sold the vehicle to a dealer. The victim did not receive payment for the vehicle. Police contacted the suspect by phone.
Malicious mischief: Graffiti was painted at Homestead Park in and around the restroom building sometime after 2 p.m., Dec. 28, in the 8100 block of S.E. 40th Street. A Mercer Island woman reported the graffiti at 10 a.m. Total damages are estimated at $725.
Lost wallet: A Mercer Island man, 56, lost his wallet in the 6900 block of 94th Avenue S.E. sometime after Aug. 3. The wallet contained $40 in cash, a consular ID and a bank card. He reported the loss at 10:54 a.m.
Car prowls: An unknown suspect stole a vehicle registration, insurance card and portable electronics cords out of an unlocked Ford Fusion parked in a carport overnight in the 7700 block of S.E. 22nd Street.
$28,000 worth of items were stolen out of a Toyota 4-Runner Highlander in secure parking in the 2700 block of 78th Avenue S.E. The victim, a 27-year-old man, reported the theft of multiple items inside the vehicle after Dec. 23 while he was on vacation. Stolen items included fly fishing reels, fly fishing lures, an Apple iPod, a gold necklace and pair of sunglasses.
Arrest: Police booked a 20-year-old man into the Issaquah Jail at 9:15 p.m. on a Mercer Island Municipal Court $1,500 warrant for no valid operator license without identity.
Accident: A SUV rear-ended a van waiting at a stop sign at 8:45 p.m. in the 3400 block of 78th Avenue S.E. The driver of the SUV, a 22-year-old man, was cited for inattention. He said he had forgotten about the stop sign. There were no injuries.
Bike accident: Three bicyclists in a pace line crashed at 12:45 p.m. in the 5300 block of East Mercer Way. The first bicyclist's front tire slipped on the wet pavement and went down. He was struck by another bicyclist who could not stop in time, and a third bicyclist slid out of control to avoid hitting the first two, who reported injuries.
The front door of a residence in the 8100 block of West Mercer Way was pried and forced open sometime between 3:10 and 7:55 p.m., Jan. 2. Unknown burglars stole $7,250 worth of items from the house, including an Apple wireless keyboard, HP laptop, wireless mouse, external hard drive, 27” widescreen Mac, and flatscreen TV.
