In their first game after last week’s snow storm ravaged KingCo schedules, the Mercer Island girls basketball team traveled to Liberty. The Islanders lost 59-50.

Liberty had a strong edge at the end of the first quarter with a 19-9 lead. They extended that lead by 10 points, while holding the Islanders to five in the second for a 29-14 score at halftime.

Mercer Island outscored the Patriots in a second half comeback, hitting 16 points to the Patriots 15 in the third quarter and going 20-15 in the fourth quarter. Despite the strong second half, it was not enough for the Islanders to retake the game.

Julia Blumenstein had 16 points overall, while Ari Moscatel added 10 for the Islanders. Savanna Reid and Renae Tessem each had five points, followed by four from Suri Johnson and Jamie Mouner. Lauren Ellis had three, Brooke Behrbaum had tow and Carly Andersen added one point.

The Islanders will host Juanita on Friday, Jan. 27 in a 6:30 p.m. game. The team will then travel to Sammamish on Saturday, Jan. 28 for a 3:45 p.m. varsity game.
