$62,000 worth of jewelry missing out of Aljoya couple's safe | Mercer Island Police Blotter

On Nov. 1, a couple residing at Aljoya reported a burglary that took place sometime between May and the end of September, in the 2400 block of 76th Avenue S.E. The victims had been away from home, in New Jersey, during that time. When they returned, they discovered that their safe had been opened and five pieces of jewelry were missing. They did not report the theft until they verified that none of the jewelry was in New Jersey. Jewelry items included a gold bracelet with semiprecious stones; gold, platinum and diamond pins; and platinum and diamond earrings. The estimated loss was $62,000.

Oct. 26

Order violation: A 49-year-old Mercer Island woman violated a domestic violence protection order four times by contacting the victim, 50, and his son via electronic messages since Oct. 14.

Accident: A Ford Mustang struck a street light pole at 5:18 p.m. in the 2800 block of 80th Avenue S.E. The 16-year-old driver accelerated away from the stop sign too quickly and his vehicle fishtailed while turning. The driver overcorrected and his vehicle then spun out into oncoming lanes before striking the pole. Two witnesses were present. There were no injuries.

Oct. 29

Car prowls: Someone stole a wallet that contained $3,300 in cash out of a BMW parked in a garage in the 4500 block of Ferncroft Road sometime after 3 p.m. the previous day. The victim had left his garage door open and his vehicle was unlocked. His wallet, which also contained credit cards and a driver’s license, was taken from the dashboard.

A Dell laptop worth $500 was stolen out of a Toyota Camry in the 9000 block of East Shorewood Drive sometime after 6:30 p.m., the previous evening. The victim drove her vehicle all day after the prowl before having it processed by the MIPD.

In the same block, several items were stolen out of a Subaru Legacy overnight in a residential parking garage. Someone stole a Microsoft work badge, vehicle insurance card and garage entry card. Fingerprints were lifted from the interior and exterior of the vehicle.

Oct. 31

Accident: A pickup truck rear-ended a Honda Civic at 2:32 p.m. after changing lanes in the 3200 block of Island Crest Way. The Honda was stopped for a pedestrian in the crosswalk. The 46-year-old driver of the pickup was cited for making an unsafe lane change. He said that he had swerved into the outer lane to avoid a vehicle that had cut him off.

Nov. 1

Car prowl: Someone rummaged through two unlocked vehicles, a Jeep and Honda, overnight in the 8400 block of S.E. 36th Street. A master key was stolen along with an Islander Middle School ID badge. The estimated loss was $50.

License plate thefts: The front license plate of a Jeep Cherokee was stolen sometime overnight in the 8600 block of S.E. 78th Street. Two license plates were stolen from a Honda Civic in the 3200 block of 81st Place S.E. The theft was reported at 12:27 p.m., but the actual date of the theft was unknown.

Arrest: A 22-year-old man was booked into the Issaquah Jail for two days on a DUI conviction.

Nov. 3

Drunk driver: A pickup truck exiting westbound I-90 onto Island Crest Way sped up the off-ramp and veered suddenly to avoid rear-ending another vehicle, then drove over two pedestrian islands, wrecked a pedestrian light pole, and continued down a nearby street at 3:30 p.m. Police arrested the driver, a 65-year-old Seattle man who had been drinking. One witness, another driver, was present at the intersection.

Fender-bender: A SUV rear-ended a vehicle that was stopped for traffic at 4:41 p.m. in the 8200 block of Island Crest Way, at the westbound I-90 off-ramp. A tow truck operator heard the collision at the off-ramp. A police officer was present at the scene and stopped the SUV, which turned onto Island Crest Way after the collision, after the victim told the officer that she had been rear-ended. The 78-year-old driver of the SUV, who admitted to the collision, was cited for inattention. The victim reported neck pain and a headache. Neither vehicle was towed.

Assault: Police arrested a 26-year-old Mercer Island woman at 10:54 p.m. in the 3000 block of 78th Avenue S.E. for domestic violence, assault and battery. One witness was present.

Nov. 4

Theft: A 41-year-old Las Vegas woman left her purse on a bench in the north end of Mercerdale Park between 2:45 and 4:36 p.m. in the 3200 block of 78th Avenue S.E. When she returned to the park to search for her purse, she did not find it. The purse contained all of her ID and $100 in cash, and she was scheduled for a flight home the next day.
