Firefighters responded to a small fire in a Newell Court apartment unit on 78th Avenue S.E. early Friday morning just before 9 a.m. The fire was contained by sprinklers in the second-story unit. Residents were evacuated and some gathered down below in the Fitness Together center and on the street, waiting to be told when they could return to their units.

Two cats were rescued from the apartment and there were no injuries. The cause of the fire is unknown and remains under investigation.
