Phelps is regional editor for north Reporter papers

Former Mercer Island Reporter sports editor and writer Matt Phelps has been named regional editor for the Kirkland and Bothell/Kenmore Reporter Newspapers.

Phelps covered sports on Mercer Island for eight years, between 2001 and 2009, including all Mercer Island High School athletics and club swimming. During his time on the Island, he covered multiple boys and girls state swim titles, six trips to the boys basketball state tournament, and numerous boys and girls water polo state titles.

His time on Mercer Island also included reporting on the retirement of Mercer Island legends and long time high school head coaches, Ed Pepple and Dick Nicholl.

He began his career in 2000 as the sports editor for the Whidbey News-Times and took the job on Mercer Island to be closer to family. In 2009, Phelps began working for the Kirkland Reporter as the city reporter and then moved over to become the assistant regional editor for Kirkland and Bothell/Kenmore.

He has won more than 50 journalism awards, including two Sports Section of the Year awards from the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association while on Mercer Island, and three first place Society of Professional Journalist awards for news writing.

The Kirkland Reporter and Bothell-Kenmore Reporter newspapers are sister papers to the Mercer Island Reporter and are all owned by Sound Publishing, Inc
