Mercer Island orchestra students selected for All-State honors

Six Mercer Island orchestra students will perform as part of the All-State Orchestra at the Washington Music Educators Association state conference in Yakima, Wash. on Feb. 16. Students David Bi, Hubert Jung, Devina Kumar, Sarah Lee, Vienna Weber and Nathan Wacker will represent Mercer Island High School at the conference.

“All of this is a very big deal,” said Mercer Island orchestra teacher Vicki White-Multin. “Mercer Island may have placed more students in the honor groups than any other high school in the state.”

Three of the MIHS All-State honorees performed in the All-National Orchestra Oct. 30 in Nashville, Tenn. They were: David Bi, violin; Ann Guinee, viola; and Sarah Lee, violin. These students prepared music that they performed under the baton of four of the most prominent conductors in the United States: Dr. Peter Boonshaft, Miriam Burns, Rollo Dilworth and Rodney Whitaker.

The All-State Orchestra honorees are:

David Bi – Violin – All-State Chamber Orchestra

Hubert Jung – Violin – All-State Symphony Orchestra

Devina Kumar – Violin – All-State Symphony Orchestra

Sarah Lee – Violin – All-State Symphony Orchestra

Vienna Weber – Cello – All-State Chamber Orchestra

Nathan Wacker – String Bass – All-State Concert Band
