Neighborhood forums being held on middle school expansion

The Mercer Island School District will host three neighborhood forums in the coming months regarding the Islander Middle School (IMS) expansion. Each forum will last from 7–9 p.m. in the IMS library.

“The district is hard at work keeping the IMS expansion project on track for construction with an opening date for students in the fall of 2016. This is one of the three targeted overcrowding solutions that passed in the Feb. 11 bond election,” said MISD Superintendent Dr. Gary Plano. “As part of the State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA), we want input from the neighborhood that surrounds the middle school concerning site and building design, traffic impacts, and landscape and buffer designs.”

The open-house style events are scheduled with the following dates, locations and themes:


Monday, April 28

Site and building design

7–9 p.m.

Islander Middle School Library, 8225 SE 72nd Street


Monday, May 12

Traffic review

7–9 p.m.

Islander Middle School Library, 8225 SE 72nd Street


Tuesday, June 3

Site landscaping and buffer design

7–9 p.m., Islander Middle School Library, 8225 SE 72nd Street
