Recycling Center hours reduced

The Island’s volunteer-operated recycling center has reduced its hours of operation this winter and is now only open on weekends, including Friday.

The unannounced closures have left some residents to find other drop-off stations as far as Seattle and Renton or leave behind their stuffed paper bags and cardboard boxes at the entry.

The center also recently celebrated its 33rd anniversary. It is operated by the high school’s Committee to Save the Earth.

The recycling center is now open Friday through Sunday. It is located in between Mercerdale and Bicentennial Park on the corner of S.E. 27th Street and 31st Avenue.

Other nearby recycling centers exist on Harbor Island in Seattle at 8105 5th Ave. S. and in Renton at 3021 N.E. 4th St. The county transfer station in Factoria does not accept recyclables.

Parent education with Jan Faull

Renowned educator Jan Faull, M. Ed, will be on the Island next week to discuss how parents can teach responsibility and accountability instead of entitlement in a community of affluence and an atmosphere of media madness?

Learn more during the upcoming evening with Faull at 7 p.m. on Oct. 2 in the Islander Middle School multi-purpose room.

Faull has taught parent education for more than 25 years and has a weekly column in The Seattle Times on Saturdays. She teaches at Overlake Hospital, has authored several books and is well known for her practical, tested advice.

The event is sponsored by the PTA Parent Education Committees of MIHS, IMS, Island Park, Lakeridge, West Mercer and St. Monica’s schools.

Studying abroad

The Mercer Island Rotary Club is holding an informational meeting at 7 p.m., Oct. 2, at the Mercer Island library for high school sophomores interested in studying abroad.

Exchange student needs a place to stay

The Mercer Island Rotary is looking for families interested in hosting an exchange student from Turkey.

The current student, John, is an exceptional young person who is self-sufficient, well-mannered and easy to relate to. He has strong English-speaking skills.

Hosting is a positive experience that gives your family another perspective on the world.
