Recent MIHS graduates found shot near Washington, D.C.
A tragedy involving two former Mercer Island High School students is unfolding in Virginia near the nation's capitol.
A 2004 MIHS graduate and former U.S. soldier is suspected of shooting a Virginia police officer as well as killing his wife before turning the gun on himself Tuesday night, Sept. 22.
Robert K. Hui, 22, may have shot and killed Sarah Tredop, 19, a 2007 MIHS graduate, inside their apartment in Arlington, Va., according to the Arlington County Police Department. Hui was found dead in his silver Lexus SUV on Tuesday night after allegedly shooting a police officer during a routine traffic stop, police said.
Around 8 p.m. on Tuesday, two Alexandria City officers pulled Hui over for erratic driving behavior. Police stated that he pulled over to the shoulder of the highway, and as the officers approached the vehicle, the suspect shot the officer standing at the passenger side of the vehicle. The officer survived the shooting and is expected to recover.
Hui's wife, Tredop, was later found dead in their apartment when police searched it after the altercation. Tredop's parents still live on Mercer Island and declined to comment.
The high school sent out a press release stating that the district is mourning the loss of both its former students and does not have a comment at this time in respect for the ongoing police investigation and families involved.
According to the Military District of Washington, D.C., Hui was an enlisted private who joined the Army in October of 2006, but was honorably discharged from the Army nearly two weeks ago. Hui was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division of the Old Guard Caisson. The Old Guard is in charge of burying soldiers at the Arlington National Cemetery.
Alexandria officers involved in the incident also said they saw another car near Hui's SUV when he was observed driving erratically. A red Volkswagen Jetta with its hazard lights flashing appeared to be following Hui's car. Police would like to speak with the driver of the Jetta. Police also would like to speak to anyone who had recent contact with Hui or Tredop. Anyone with information about the case should call the police tip line at (703) 228-4242.
More information will be posted soon.
