Preliminary results of Tuesdays primary election for City Council position 3 show Maureen Judge and Mike Cero advancing to the general election in November.

Pos. 3 is being vacated by Councilmember Sven Goldmanis, who is not seeking re-election after serving two terms. Goldmanis was elected in 1999 and in 2003 ran unopposed.

Judge, an independent consultant and single mother who moved to the Island in 2006, finished first ahead of three challengers with 1,244 votes, 42 percent of those cast.

Mike Cero followed with the second most votes, 961. Cero is currently a stay at home dad with three children. A former PACCAR engineer, Cero has also served in the U.S. Army in both Iraq wars.

Jon Friedman, an Island native, father of two and local single-family home builder, received 418 votes out of the 3,189 cast by Islanders. Bob Bersos, a retired firefighter, father of three grown children and part time Mercer Island school bus driver received over 10 percent of the vote (310). There were also 11 write-in votes.
