ETC diplomas

Five students have been awarded high school diplomas from the state accredited Educational Tutoring and Consulting (ETC) on Mercer Island: Charlie B. Billow, Nicholas K. Megargel, Steven J. Hunt, Shawn M. Zak, Rafael T. Sternoff Meyers.

Rotary scholarships

The Mercer Island Rotary recently announced the recipients of scholarships for academic, vocational and technical study of seven Island residents: Thomas Clarke for marine biology at Whatcom Community College; Erica Crosby in early childhood education at Seattle Central Community College; Christian Hansen for film/video studies at Seattle Central Community College; Barton Johnson for auto repair at Renton Technical College; Mathew Kroger veterinary assistant program at PIMA Institute; Esther Laing for interpreter/translator studies at Bellevue Community College; and Ashely Mendes for business studies at the National Institute for the Deaf.

Other awards grants and scholarships to Mercer Island High School Class of 2005 included: The Crest Founders Award to Kyla Jacobson; Masonic Lodge Scholarship went to Michelle Lam and Lee Cordova; The Braman Family Writing scholarship to Olivia Rosane; Phi Beta Kappa Book award to Olivia Rosane; Army Reserve Officers Scholarship to Christie Plackis; Wayne Kunishige Memorial Scholarship to Eve Hampton; the Daughters of the American Revolution patriotism medal went to Evan Howard; Mercer Island Kiwanis Key Club awards were given to Elizabeth DeVleming, Lisa Wan, Moon Kim and Stephanie Louie.

St. Monica student's poster 2nd in contest

Stephanie Carl, a fourth-grade student at St. Monica School won second place in the Seattle Aquarium ``Your Ocean -- Our Home'' art contest. For her poster, Carl received a $1,500 college savings account from T. Rowe Price. Over 1,000 local students entered the contest designed to encourage environmental awareness about oceans and marine habitats.
