Between 8 a.m. and 5:15 p.m., Aug. 31, someone broke into a home in the 4000 block of 82nd Avenue S.E. and stole a Sony camcorder, Kodak IS 443 digital camera, personal checks and various items of jewelry. The front door of the home had been forced open.
During the night of Aug. 25, someone stole a Motorola cellular phone and earpiece, a silver glass necklace and a Mitek brand miniature DVD player from a residence in the 4800 block of 86th Avenue S.E. Loss is estimated at $711.
A Renton resident reported at 4:40 p.m., Aug. 31, that someone stole a Ford Taurus from the parking lot of a coffee shop in the 7800 block of 27th Street. The vehicle owner had gone into the coffee shop, then left the car parked in the lot while he attended a rally a block away. Also missing was a set of Packard Bell golf clubs and golf bag that was in the trunk of the stolen vehicle.
A 2002 Chevrolet Silverado extended cab, long-bed truck belonging to a Redmond man was stolen between 12:45 p.m. and 8:15 p.m., Aug. 26, from the south side parking area of Long's Drug Store, in the 8400 block of S.E. 68th Street. Inside the vehicle was clothing, a cell phone, various CDs and truck hardware. Loss is estimated at $30,900. An 18-year-old Island man is a suspect in the theft.
A red, Ford Econovan was stolen between 5:30 p.m., Aug. 19, and 7:30 a.m., Aug. 22, from the 7900 block of S.E. 28th Street. The vehicle is owned by Lummi Key and has a John Hancock parking sticker in the window.
Bellevue police notified the Mercer Island Police Department that someone on Aug. 30 fraudulently used the credit card of a resident in the 8200 block of S.E. 26th Street. The resident hadn't received any mail in the past few weeks and is believed to be the victim of mail theft.
On Aug. 27, a resident of the 4800 block of East Mercer Way reported he found several pieces of mail in his mail box belonging to residents of the 7600 and 5600 blocks of East Mercer Way.
Between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m., Aug. 26, someone scratched the side of a Jeep Grand Cherokee parked behind the Thai on Mercer Island restaurant in the 7600 block of S.E. 27th Street. Damage is estimated at $500.
Between 5 p.m., Aug. 27, and 3 p.m., Aug. 29, someone punched out the locks of a Chevrolet Silverado truck parked on the street in front of a residence in the 6600 block of 82nd Avenue S.E. No entry appeared to have been made to the vehicle. Damage is estimated at $300.
Between 8 p.m., Aug. 27, and 10 a.m., Aug. 28, someone cut the plastic tarps attached to the dugout fences at the Island Crest Park baseball field, in the 5600 block of Island Crest Way.
At 7:30 a.m., Aug. 27, school staff at Island Park Elementary School discovered that during the previous night someone burned a 4-foot by 5-foot section of grass in the playfield. Apparently, someone had built a campfire in the area. Debris and soda pop cans were left at the scene.
A 41-year-old Island woman was frightened at about 5:30 a.m., Aug. 30, when someone jumped out of the bushes at her while she was walking along a pathway in the 9000 block of West Shorewood Drive. The woman screamed and ran away. The woman's husband and police searched the area but found no suspects.
Stolen boat found
A Bayliner watercraft registered to an Island resident was recovered near the 8300 block of Avalon Drive by Seattle Police at 10:15 a.m., Aug. 29. The vessel had been reported stolen at 5 p.m., Aug. 24. The ignition of the boat had been damaged and various items not belonging to the boat owner were found in the vessel. Items included screwdrivers and a Ford key. Fingerprints were taken.
Between 5 p.m., Aug. 27 and 8:30 p.m., Aug. 28, someone entered an unlocked Chevrolet truck parked in the 8500 block of 85th Avenue S.E. and rifled through the contents of the glove box and console area. Valuables inside a briefcase in the vehicle were not disturbed.
A Ford F250 truck was broken into between 8 a.m., Aug. 27, and 2:35 p.m., Aug. 28, from the 2200 block of 72nd Avenue S.E. A laptop computer and case was stolen from inside the vehicle. Loss is estimated at $1800. There also was $500 damage to the truck.
An Arizona resident reported that someone broke into his vehicle at 2:28 p.m., Aug. 28, while he was inside registering at the Travel Lodge, in the 7600 block of Sunset Highway. The locked Toyota Cressida was parked in the culdesac, with the windows open about three inches. When the man returned to his car, the trunk and driver's side door was open. A red, crew cab-style truck was backing out from next to his vehicle. Missing was $500 cash, clothing, a shaving kit and several paper items, including a will and stock certificates. Fingerprints were taken from the vehicle.
Possession of stolen property
A 36-year-old Bellevue man was arrested at 4 a.m., Aug. 28, in the 8000 block of North Mercer Way for possession of items stolen from the Albertsons and Walgreens stores. A sleeping bag and assorted items inside of an Albertsons shopping cart and a few shopping containers from Walgreens were confiscated from the man.
Party cave discovered
Someone built a ``party cave'' in a wooded area of the 5400 block of East Mercer Way, near the south end of the 53rd Street greenbelt. Police discovered the area, which was littered with furniture, lumber, garbage and evidence of alcohol and drug use. There was extensive digging and tunnels in the area. Police dismantled the ``cave.''
Recovered stolen vehicle
Police discovered a Ford F250 supercab truck parked at about 2:40 p.m., Sept. 1, in the lot of Hollywood Video, in the 2700 block of 77th Avenue S.E. the vehicle was similar to one that had been reported stolen from the Island QFC store, but was, instead, a vehicle stolen from Seattle. The ignition form the vehicle had been punched and the plastic housing around the door lock had been broken. Fingerprints were taken from the vehicle.
Three Island boys, ages 17 and 18, were transported to Mercer Island Police Department at 12:31 a.m., Sept. 1, after one of the youths was reported to be drinking and yelling in the parking lot of the QFC store, in the 7800 block of S.E. 28th Street. The other two boys were found nearby and had also been drinking alcohol. The boys were released to their parents.
Hit and run
Someone damaged the rear passenger side portion of a 2005 Subaru Legacy station wagon, that had been parked in the north lot of Luther Burbank Park, in the 2400 block of 84th Avenue S.E. The incident occurred at about 4 p.m., Aug. 24, but the victim didn't discover the damage until he returned home later that day. No note was left on the vehicle and no witnesses have stepped forward.
