Student arrested and expelled for knives

A Mercer Island High School student was arrested, taken to the Mercer Island police station for processing, and later released to his father's custody after school officials told police the 14-year-old brought two knives to school. Another student had reported the the student to associate principal Dan Peterson. The knives, switchblades, were placed into evidence after the student showed police where he had hidden them across the street from the school. The student was expelled. He may be readmitted to the school after he has a psychological assessment to determine if he is a danger to other students or himself, Superintendent Cyndy Simms said.

Recovered vehicle

A black 2003 Mercedes Benz 320 reported stolen March 21 was found at 9 p.m., the same night, parked in the carport of a residence in the 4200 block of 86th Avenue S.E. The 75-year-old resident told police he got the car from the Phil Smart car dealership on Airport Way, who gave him the vehicle as a service loaner. The vehicle owner, a Newcastle man employed by the Washington State Patrol Crime lab, said he had left the vehicle at the car dealership.

Theft from vehicles

About $500 worth of tennis equipment was reported stolen during the night of March 23 from an unlocked 2001 Lexus sport utility vehicle parked in a residence carport in the 3300 block of 97th Avenue S.E. Missing was a green Wilson tennis bag that contained two Triad 5 tennis rackets.

At 7:50 a.m. March 24, a resident in the 7000 block of 80th Avenue S.E. reported someone had taken the front and back license plates from a silver, 2002 Acura SUV parked outside the residence.

Stolen credit cards were used at two Seattle Shell gas stations March 24, after a wallet and $1,500 in cash was stolen from a truck parked at the end of a long driveway in the 3600 block of West Mercer Way. The wallet also contained personal information, such as a driver's license and birth certificate. Someone broke out the passenger-side window to gain access to the locked vehicle. There was $200 damage to the vehicle's door.

On the morning of March 23, a resident in the 4300 block of 92nd Avenue S.E. reported someone broke out the driver's-side window of a Honda Civic parked in front of the residence. Reported missing were: $3,000 worth of compact discs, headphones and arm band for an I-Pod, an Alpine CD player valued at $150, and three paychecks with a total value of $249. Fingerprints found on the door were placed into evidence.

On March 22, a resident in the 6600 block of 82nd Avenue S.E. reported someone rummaged through their unlocked 1993 Mercury Villager van. Nothing was stolen from the vehicle. A jacket originally thought missing was found discarded in the yard of the residence.

A resident of the 8900 block of S.E. 54th Street reported a vehicle prowl the morning of March 21. Someone entered an unlocked 2000 Dodge Dakota pickup truck parked in the residence driveway and took a flashlight, change, a small knife and the vehicle's ignition key from the glovebox of the truck. The suspect left several documents in the glovebox, including the vehicle registration.

Car stolen, keys inside

A gold, four-door 1999 Cadillac DeVille, with an estimated value of $15,000, was stolen from an open garage in the 9700 block of S.E. 41st Street. The car was discovered missing at 5:45 a.m. March. 23. The vehicle owner told police he left the keys in the car.

Credit card fraud and mail theft

A resident of the 4100 block of Boulevard Place S.E. reported March 18 that someone had gotten information from stolen mail to access his mother's bank account. More than $22,000 was illegally charged to the account from ATM locations, grocery stores and gas stations in Renton, Kent and Seattle. The bank was alerted and the account closed.

Mail also was reported missing March 18 from a mailbox in the 4300 block of Forest Avenue S.E. The postal carrier told the resident they remembered placing mail in the box on Mar. 17, but the box was empty when the resident checked later that night.

DUI

A 28-year-old Mercer Island woman was arrested, cited and later released for driving under the influence at 1:38 a.m. March 19 in the 4300 block of Island Crest Way. The woman's vehicle, a silver 2001 Mercedes Benz 240, was impounded.
