An MIPD officer stopped a man in the middle of a burglary at the South-end Rite Aid on Dec. 9, after responding to the store’s alarm system. According to the police report, the suspect was attempting to remove merchandise from the closed business through a broken glass door. The thief led the officer on a foot chase, entered a 1992 Acura Integra and fled the scene. He did not get far before veering into a ditch and again running on foot. The officer located the car and called in a K9 search team to track down the suspect. He was identified and arrested. Evidence found on the suspect included a butane lighter, small bag with prescription pills and car keys. A hatchet head, which was broken off from its handle, was found on the floor inside the store. The thief was booked into the King County Jail.Contact Mercer Island Reporter Staff Reporter Staff at firstname.lastname@example.org.
