Interlake stuns MI boys soccer

The third time proved to be the charm for the Interlake Saints Monday night at Islander Stadium. Getting two goals from Jason Rodriguez, Interlake stunned Mercer Island 2-1 to win the tournament and take KingCo’s top seed into the state tournament.

The loss was Mercer Island’s first against a 3A KingCo opponent this season, winning both of their previous matchups with the Saints (13-2-1).

Lucas Meek gave Mercer Island a 1-0 lead early in the first half, but Rodriguez responded in the 36th minute to tie the game 1-1. Rodriguez struck again in the 61st with what proved to be the winning goal.

Mercer Island (12-3-2) will take on Lake Washington (8-6-2) in a loser-out contest at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 13 at MIHS. The winner will face the fifth-seeded Metro team for a state tournament berth.

Baseball bounces back against Rebels

Mercer Island baseball bounced back from a four-game losing streak to beat Juanita 8-4 in their KingCo tournament loser-out game Monday at Bannerwood Park.

After the Rebels took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, the Islanders exploded for seven runs in the fourth. Noah Hsue went 2-4 at the plate with a double and an RBI for Mercer Island, while Michael Bantle and George Pallis each had two hits and two RBI.

The Islanders will take on Bellevue in a loser-out game at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 12 at Bannerwood Park. The winner will take on the fifth-seeded team out of the Metro Conference for a berth to the state tournament.

Season ends for MI fastpitch

Mercer Island fastpitch fell to cross-lake rivals Bellevue 12-5 Friday, May 8 at South Mercer Playfields.

In the losing effort, Mercer Island’s Morgan Peyou was a single shy of hitting for the cycle. Peyou batted 3-4 with a double, a triple and a home run while batting in three runs. Madi George went 4-4 for the Wolverines (9-10, 9-8).

The Islanders finished their season Monday, falling 15-1 to Juanita at South Mercer Playfields. Aimee Richardson went 4-4 at the plate, swinging for a double and a triple for the Rebels (15-6, 15-3), and Madi Hedlund had three hits in three at-bats.

The Islanders finished 2-16 in their conference and 4-16 overall.

Snohomish ends season for MI girls lacrosse

Mercer Island girls lacrosse saw its season come to an end in the first round of the state tournament, falling to Snohomish 9-8 Friday, May 8 at Islander Stadium.

Holly Waggoner had three goals and two assists for the Islanders, while Katie Brodsky had three goals and Hannah Paborsky posted three assists. Alle Dunbar had six saves in goal for Mercer Island. For Snohomish (8-5), Hannah Graves had four goals and Jacquelin Shaff scored twice.

Mercer Island finished its season with a record of 9-4.

Boys LAX beats Issaquah in finale

After suffering its first loss of the season to Bellevue May 4, Mercer Island boys lacrosse bounced back in their regular season finale with a 9-6 win over Issaquah Friday, May 8 at Islander Stadium.

With the win, the Islanders (18-1, 9-1) locked up their division’s second seed heading into the state tournament.

Evan Condon led Mercer Island with four goals and picked up three ground balls, while Mitch Stickney had three goals and two assists. In the net, Ezra Tillinger had 13 saves.

The defending state champion Bellevue Wolverines (15-4, 9-0) took the top seed after denying Mercer Island’s bid for a perfect season in a 13-9 Wolverine win at Bellevue High School.

Mercer Island is scheduled to begin postseason play Tuesday, May 19 at Islander Stadium.
