Islander cross country teams advance

Mercer Island raced through League Championships at Lake Sammamish State Park.

Mercer Island raced through the 5,000 meter race at the 3A/2A KingCo League Championships last Thursday at Lake Sammamish State Park.

The girls came in third with a team score of 89, while the boys came in fifth with a team score of 91.

Sophomore Alexa Bauman placed 10th for the Mercer Island girls with an individual time of 19:34.54. Cecilia Rosenman placed 15th, Alida Scalzo finished 20th, Linden Ellgren placed 21st and Sarah Bjarnason came in 23rd.

Seniors Sydney Zeldes and Rachel Van Gelder also competed for the Islanders.

For the Mercer Island boys, junior Dylan Lesko placed 9th, crossing the finish line with an individual time of 16:38.29. Senior Nathan Cummings was right behind him, placing 10th. Daniel Mayer finished 18th, Nathan Gallatin placed 25th and Tiger McBurney finished 29th. Also competing for the boys were Teddy Larkin and Eric Schulz.

Next up for the Islanders will be the SeaKing District 2 cross-country championship Thursday, Oct. 31 at Lake Sammamish State Park.

Academic Champs

The Islander Boys Cross Country team was named the 2013 WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires Scholastic 3A Fall Team Academic State Champions. The team GPA was a 3.876.

The team is coached by Erica Hill.
