Letter | Without parking, Sound Transit light rail station will go empty

I would expect that when all is done, it will be a very lonely station. No place to park — few riders.

I frequently will drive to the existing Park-and-Ride lot on Mercer Island and wait for my grandson to arrive from Seattle. It is quite amazing how many cars drive into the Park-and-Ride, but then quickly leave after finding no parking spaces.

An available Park-and-Ride lot will be key to an efficient use of light rail along I-90. How many Eastsiders park on the Mercer Island Park-and-Ride lot early in the morning to avoid the higher parking fees in Seattle or simply to avoid the rush hour traffic? This is good for Eastsiders, but ridiculous for Mercer Islanders.

Change the parking rules and issue parking stickers to Mercer Island owners of state-registered vehicles licensed to a Mercer Island address and with the stickers firmly attached to the vehicle. Loose stickers will only invite such stickers to be shared with friends living on the Eastside of Lake Washington.
