Mercer Island Boy Scouts earn Eagle awards

Four Boy Scouts from Troop 457 received their Eagle awards at a Court of Honor at Emmanuel Church on April 30. James Bellitto, Benjamin Stoops and Adam Tucker are seniors at Mercer Island High School; Owen Landefeld is a senior at Lakeside School. The four have been scouting together since fifth grade, and have taken high adventure treks at National Scout Seabase in Florida and Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.

For their Eagle projects, Bellitto oversaw the construction of a barbecue pit for deploying soldiers and their families to use at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Tucker led a crew to rebuild the steps in the North Mercerdale Hillside Park, and Stoops organized a group to build stairs that provide easier access to North Mercerdale Hillside Park. Landefeld oversaw construction of a ceremonial fire pit for flag disposal at the VFW Hall.

The Eagle award is scouting’s highest honor for boys, and requires a scout to earn at least 21 merit badges, show leadership and voluntarism over several years and plan and lead a service project. Only 3 to 4 percent of Boy Scouts earn the award.
