MIPD to host immigration forum as council declares solidarity with immigrants

Residents are invited to join Mercer Island Police Department Chief Ed Holmes and others for a community meeting on immigration at 7 p.m. March 29 in the Mercer Island City Hall Council Chambers.

Policies and practices that impact immigrant community members will be discussed, along with strategies to keep the community safe.

At its March 20 meeting, the Mercer Island City Council joined with the U.S. Conference of Mayors in proclaiming a National Immigration Day of Action for Tuesday, March 21.

Mayor Bruce Bassett used the occasion to declare the city’s solidarity with the immigrant community, and assert its commitment to diversity, inclusiveness and equality, in keeping with the council’s principles and values.

In November last year, the council reaffirmed its role in bringing people together and not dividing them, as part of a proclamation reaffirming civility, equality, diversity and sustainability on Mercer Island.

Historical Society invites community to be part of revitalization

Due to the sudden passing of Mercer Island Historical Society President-Elect Sally Brown, the group is putting activities on temporary hiatus, ceasing collection of dues, general meetings and newsletter publication for the next few months.

Meanwhile, the board will re-consider its mission, with the goal of renewing and revitalizing the 63-year-old organization, which is one of the oldest on the Island.

The society invites the community to be a part of its reinvention, as there’s never been a time when the Island’s history has been more important.

Youth suicide prevention workshop is tonight

Mercer Island’s Parent Edge group and staff from the city’s Youth and Family Services Department will present a workshop for parents on youth suicide prevention at 7 p.m. March 29 at Islander Middle School. Parents will learn the evidence-based prevention strategies they can use to help a youth in crisis stay safe and get support.

Just like first aid and CPR, this valuable knowledge belongs in every parent’s toolkit to support a healthy family and community. To learn more about this topic nationwide, visit www.intheforefront.org.
