Mercer Island Rotary Club announces March students of the month

Mercer Island High School seniors Cameron Cummings and Leah Raissis were the Mercer Island Rotary Club’s students of the month for March.

Cummings is thoroughly involved with band, including representing the Band Student Advisory, being a drum major in the Mercer Island Band and doing various band-related volunteering.

At MIHS, Cummings is involved with the marching band, wind ensemble, cross country and ultimate frisbee. He is the officer and co-founder of the Spanish Honor Society and has previously been a class officer and captain of ultimate frisbee.

Cummings has been recognized as the winner of Washington Music Educators Association Eastshore Solo and Ensemble contest in the alto-bass clarinet category, all-state band and all-state wind ensemble.

Parker Bixby, MIHS teacher, wrote that Cummings “sets himself apart as an artist, a leader, an advocate, a mentor and most importantly a team member focused on the success of those around him … He has brought this worldview to his leadership role as drum major and band president and will bring it to any of the extraordinary things he chooses to pursue as a young adult.”

Raissis is a musician, vocalist, singer-songwriter and radio personality. She has immersed herself in music and radio performances, including being the founder and singer-songwriter of a contemporary rock band that has performed all over the Seattle area and being a host and program director for local high school radio station, The Bridge.

Raissis has made appearances on New Day Northwest and King 5 Television. She has been awarded with Youth of the Quarter by Mercer Island Boys and Girls Club, second place for Best Promo for radio show by Washington State High School Radio Awards and Outstanding Student MIHS by Mercer Island Lions Club.

At MIHS, she is the founder and president of Club of Rock and has previously been a member of the French Honor Society.

Outside of school, Raissis has been involved with The Amplify Project and St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church.

Jamie Prescott wrote that Raissis’ passion for music has been heard at MIHS for the past four years. Raissis “found a special connection with the MIHS radio station early in her high school career,” Prescott said. “This connection led her to explore her passions further by connecting her love for music with her interest in radio; she has had opportunities to interview and collaborate with Rock and Roll Hall of Famers and cutting-edge local artists.”
