Mercer Island High School students did better than their counterparts in Washington state.

The MIHS Class of 2012 did better than the Washington state score average on the test, which covers skills in English, math, reading and science. Mercer Island students averaged 26.7 on the four tests, compared to 22.9 as the state average.

“I am very proud of our students and staff for their outstanding performance on these important benchmarks of college-readiness,” said Superintendent Gary Plano.

Washington’s average of 22.9 is the fifth highest in the nation, behind Massachusetts with a 24.1 average, Connecticut and New Hampshire at 23.8 and Maine and New Jersey a 23.4. The nationals average score this year was 21.1 and just over 21 percent of Washington high school seniors took the test last year. Mercer Island had 205 participate in the exam.
