Mercer Island High School students continued to earn accolades last month, picking up honors at the state debate championship and being chosen as aerospace scholars.
Dakota Alcantara-Camacho, a senior, won a second straight state debate title, while she and sophomore Stephanie Permut finished first in the state policy division with a perfect 12-0 record. Steven Adler, a sophomore on the debate team, earned a seventh-place finish in the State Lincoln-Douglas competition and took home the sixth-place speaker award.
Seniors Lucas Eggers and Caroline Stephens finished fourth overall in the state public forum event, and Olivia Witter, a senior, brought home fourth in the interpretive reading individual event while junior Ian Zhang finished fourth individually in oratory.
Two Islanders were selected as Washington Aerospace Scholars for 2009, out of a field of 260 juniors.
Matthew Wiens and William Voit earned the chance to take a NASA-designed online course as part of the aerospace program and may get the chance to spend a week during the summer at a program hosted by the Washington Museum of Flight.
