BERT (HERBERT E.) POUND

Bert (Herbert E) Pound was born September 28, 1916 in Grand Forks, British Columbia to parents Arthur Wilfred and Mary Luella (Taylor) Pound.

The family moved to Seattle in 1923. He became a citizen of the U.S in 1935 through the naturalization of his Mother. He died on November 12, 2016 after a brief illness.

Bert is preceded in death by his loving wife LaVerne after 66 years of marriage.

Bert and LaVerne made their home on Mercer Island in 1946 and remained there all their lives.

Bert worked in the hotel industry before spending 20 years at the Boeing Company working in Industrial Engineering, Process Improvement, Training and Motivation. After retiring he continued running his own small business selling advertising specialties. He was active in civic affairs on Mercer Island as well.

Beyond spending time with his family, Bert’s greatest joy was playing the snare drum at Queen Anne High, with the University of Washington Husky Marching Band, The UW Alumni Band, the Renton Concert Band and Bellevue Community Band. He was very proud to have played with the Husky Band at the 1937 Rose Bowl. His love for the Husky Band continued when he discovered and joined the UW Alumni Band. Bert became known as the “Pushup Guy” for doing one-handed pushups to celebrate every Husky Football score.

Bert’s love for others throughout his life and his desire to help resulted in many friends. He passed peacefully with family and friends at his side. We will miss him dearly, but celebrate joy in his being reunited with LaVerne and in the presence of God. Bert is survived by his son Bruce (Shannon) and grandson Brendan.

A Celebration of Life will be held in January. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the Bert Pound Scholarship Fund. The address is: HMBAA c/o Husky Band, UW Graves Building, Box 354070, Seattle, WA 98195.
