Mary Shelton

Mary Shelton

Mary Shelton, twice-elected to the Mercer Island School Board in the 1970’s passed away after a long illness in Seattle on June 22, 2016. Born on May 11, 1923 she married Beck Shelton in 1944 just before he began his Marine flight school training; they moved to Seattle from their hometown of Ellensburg after the War.

A longtime member of Mercer Island United Methodist Church, Mary had a loving, bright, and energetic spirit. She graduated from the University of Washington and Central Washington State College, earning degrees in Education and Speech Pathology. Mary and Beck were active volunteers in the life of the community. They particularly valued their volunteer experience with the men’s shelter for the homeless in downtown Seattle.

Her husband, Beck Shelton, precedes her in death. She is survived by their three children; Roger Shelton, Joan Broeckling, and Chuck Shelton, as well as four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life service for Mary will be held at 4:00pm Sunday, July 31, in Seattle at Haller Lake United Methodist Church, 13055 First Ave. North. The church is in Seattle and can be reached by the 130th St. exit or the 145th St. exit from I-5. A reception/connecting time will follow the service.

The family asks that friends, in lieu of flowers, consider a donation in Mary’s name to any charity serving the homeless or the disadvantaged. Possibilities could include an online donation to www.solid-ground.org, or to your local homeless shelter or Meals on Wheels program. Online you may write and view memorials to Mary and see photos at www.flintofts.com.
